Now I never had this with my first. The strange sore boobs - yes, the odd sicky feeling - yes but the on a boat in extremely choppy waters - no!!
I refuse to call it 'morning sickness'. I feel great in the mornings, its afternoon and night time that the boat picks me up and like it or not I am sailing till the next morning!! Sea sickness it is!! I have empathised with many mummies, I have suggested the ginger biscuits, eating as soon as you are hungry
sea sickness bands etc but empathy and experience are totally different! How do you do it ladies?? This is not fun, i am not glowing or radiant, I am sick as a dog and totally exhausted!!
So having purchased the said ginger nuts, drinking more water and several gigs (I am a singer) hanging on to the microphone stand hoping for the crowd to be too drunk to notice, I decide further action is required. Acupuncture it is. Despite my fear of needles off I head to my first appointment. It was an early evening appointment and I was in full sea sickness mode on arrival. So after an explanation and a showing of the needle (which looked more like a hair) I agreed. What I didn't expect is that she would then wire up the needles to a machine and electrocuted me at the same time. Various needles were positioned around me body from legs to ears to feet (wishing I had shaved my legs and removed toe fluff). Anyway, I sat buzzing away for a while and perhaps it was the distraction but I did feel slightly better. On sitting up I rolled back my shoulder which clicked as it has done for years. She said oh I can sort that, well this needle went in and I swear she set fire to my arm at the same time. The flame shot down my arm, she removed it and it hasn't clicked since!!
That evening though, the sickness returned. It was like a north sea ferry or a really, really bad hangover. (I once did a ferry trip to Amsterdam, that's a whole other blog though and i feel i may be sacked if i told that story) After speaking to a friend, i made a docs appointment and asked for a wonder drug. Cyclizine was prescribed and 20 mins after the first tablet i actually felt normal. No spinning room, no choppy water, just normal.
You see all this time, i was teaching Daisy birthing and Daisy baby classes unable to let on I was pregnant (although some Cumbernauld mums spotted the anti sickness bands and 'outed' me at Daisy Wrigglers class!!). Not easy when you have rooms full of women who will understand but you feel to early on to tell.
But the strangest thing to happen during the sea sickness phase was a private message in my singing inbox from a fellow singer who also does a psychic show. Now until last week, i had never met this guy but we work the same circuit so are facebook friends. Anyway, out the blue he messaged me and says 'I have a very strong feeling about you, you have been really unwell'. I replied 'yes i have been quite sick but I will be fine'. He then said 'You don't have to answer this but you are pregnant' (I am now totally spooked). Oh right, I said, well if you are that good, what am I having? He said, you already have a wee boy, you are having a girl!! Now, tempted as i am to find out, i probably wont so only time will tell. Lets face it, he has a 50/50 chance of being right!!!!
So ladies if you have that sicky feeling and the ginger biscuits aren't cutting it, if you are going about green as a frog and don't have the energy to brush your hair you could try the acupuncture or the good old drugs. Sanity will be resumed at some point. Oh and folk will say 'aww it will be worth it in the end' after a swift punch on the nose for the helpful advice, i have to admit they are right!! It will be.
Till the next time
